What to know before you shop

Sunday closures
Almost all retail, including supermarkets, is closed on Sundays. Petrol stations and some convenience kiosks stay open. Plan your weekly shop for Friday or Saturday.
Siesta hours
Independent shops typically close 13:00–16:00 on weekdays. Malls and large supermarkets operate continuously. If you need a hardware store at 14:00, you'll likely find it shut.
Cash vs card
Major chains and malls are card-friendly. Smaller independent shops, street markets, and kiosks often prefer or require cash. Carry €20–30 when going to a Laiki Agora or local bakery.
Price expectations
Everyday groceries (bread, dairy, local produce) are cheaper than Northern Europe. Imported goods, electronics, and clothing are roughly on par with the UK, or 10–20% above German prices.
Tipping at shops
No tipping culture at retail shops. At delis and bakery counters where staff assist you, rounding up to the nearest euro is appreciated but not expected.
VAT (ΦΠΑ) receipts
Cyprus VAT is 19% (standard) / 9% (food and hotels). Always ask for a receipt ('Μπορώ να πάρω απόδειξη;'). Receipts are required by law and help you track spending while you settle in.
